Bringing home an 8-week-old puppy: Tips for a smooth transition

Writer: Daniel EideDaniel Eide

This weekend, two of our puppies embarked on their journey to their forever homes, an incredibly special and unforgettable experience. We would love to share some tips to help make the transition of bringing home a new puppy as smooth and stress-free as possible.

1. Prepare Their Space. Set up a cozy, safe area with a bed, crate, food, and water bowls to help your puppy feel at home.

2. Puppy-Proof Your Home. Remove hazards like electrical cords, small objects, and toxic plants to create a safe environment.

3. Stick to a Routine. Establish consistent feeding, potty, and sleep schedules to help your puppy adjust quickly.

4. Introduce Gradually. Allow your puppy to explore their new home at their own pace and introduce family members calmly.

5. Start Crate Training Early! A crate can provide security and help with potty training when used positively.

6. Keep Things Low-Key. The first few days can be overwhelming, so keep interactions calm and avoid too much excitement.

7. Begin Socialization. Slowly introduce your puppy to new sounds, experiences, and gentle interactions with people and pets.

8. Be Patient and Consistent. Puppies thrive on routine and positive reinforcement, so offer praise and gentle corrections.

9. Schedule a Vet Visit. Ensure your puppy gets a health check-up and stays up-to-date on vaccinations.

10. Enjoy the Bonding Process. Take time to build trust through play, cuddles, and positive reinforcement.
